Why is ECU Testing important?
At ECU Technologies we take pride in our ECU testing, we know it is a critical decision to make whether to repair or replace the ECU. Our main ECU testing facility gives us a head start to finding any issues within the ECU, making our decisions precise and accurate.
Keep on reading to find out more.
What is an ECU and what does it mean?
In simple terms, an ECU stands for “Engine Control Unit.” The ECU can also sometimes be called the engine management system. The Engine Control Unit is a tiny electronic box, which monitors and optimises the performance and activity of your engine.
Within cars that aren’t as new, the ECU will control how much fuel is injected throughout the cylinder. However, in more modern vehicles, they will control the ignition timing and the level of boost provided by the turbocharger.
ECU’s play a big part within your vehicle, as these tiny boxes can be linked to vehicles that use sophisticated braking and traction aids. This is so they can coordinate their operation with the engine.
How do I know if my ECU isn’t working?
Your Engine Control Unit is one of the most important components found inside your vehicle and these boxes play a crucial role within newer vehicle’s. When you have an issue with your ECU this can provide problems for your vehicle, but these symptoms can alert the driver on what the issue is:
- Car not starting – If the ECU has failed then this will leave the vehicle without engine management control and will result in the vehicle not starting.
- Engine stalling/misfiring – A failing ECU will cause erratic engine behaviour, these symptoms may come and go, they also may not have any pattern or frequency.
- Check engine light comes on – An obvious indicator that something may be wrong is when the check engine light shows up, it is usually when the computer detects a problem with any sensors or circuits.
- Engine performance issues – The last indicator can be performance issues, if the ECU has an issue, then it may throw off the timing and fuel settings from the engine.
Why is ECU testing important?
ECU’s can be very expensive to repair, depending on the vehicle and model. But luckily, an ECU can be repaired or reprogrammed, this prevents the need to replace the ECU.
ECU Testing is a huge part of what we do as a business, but managing the testing itself is an extremely important job to maintain the safety of vehicles.
The main factor with testing ECU’s is that it can bring down the cost for the customer, as we previously said the ECU can actually be repaired or reprogrammed, you can also save money on getting a refurbished ECU but this can come with some risk.
It also will save time to test the ECU as we can get straight to the issue, as testing ECU’s are more precise and to the point with new technology.
The last point is obvious on but it is making sure the safety of the ECU is being met, but also that the vehicle is demonstrating compliance with applicable regulations.
